[영어 공부] titular(명목상의, 명의[이름]뿐인)

 

케임브릿지 사전은 'titular'를 "having the title of a position but not the responsibilities, duties, or power; in name only(어떤 직위의 직함을 가졌으며 책임이나 의무, 권력은 없는; 명목상의)"라고 정의했다.

"It is already agreed that Mr Alfonso Escamez will be the titular head of the new bank(알폰소 에스카메즈 씨가 새 은행의 명목상 책임자가 되기로 이미 합의가 되었다)."

콜린스 사전은 'titular'를 이렇게 설명했다.  "A titular job or position has a name that makes it seem important, although the person who has it is not really important or powerful(titular한 일이나 직위는 중요해 보이지만 실제로 그것을 가진 사람은 그렇게 중요하거나 권력이 있지 않은 것이다)."

"He is titular head, and merely signs laws occasionally(그는 명목뿐인 책임자이고, 때때로 법에 사인할 뿐이다)." 

맥밀란 사전은 'titular'를 "relating to someone who has an important official title but has no real power or authority(중요한 공식적 직함을 가졌지만 실제 권력이나 지휘권은 없는 사람과 관련된)"라고 풀이했다.
