케임브릿지 사전은 'the gloves are off'를 "used for saying that people or groups are ready to fight, argue, compete, etc. as hard as they can without showing any care or respect for each other(사람이나 그룹들이 서로 신경 쓰거나 존중하지 않고, 최선을 다해 싸우거나, 논쟁하거나, 경쟁하거나 하는 등의 준비가 되어 있다고 말할 때 쓰는 말)"라고 정의했다.
