콜린스 사전은 'cut and run'을 이렇게 정의했다. "If someone cuts and runs in a difficult situation, they try to escape from it quickly and gain an advantage for themselves, rather than deal with the situation in a responsible way(어떤 사람이 어려운 상황에서 cut and run 한다면, 그 상황에 책임을 지고 대처하기보다는 그곳으로부터 재빨리 도망치고 스스로의 이익을 구하려고 노력하는 것이다)." 인포멀(informal)하고 못마땅해하는(disapproval) 뉘앙스이다.

롱맨 사전은 'cut and run'을 "to avoid a difficult situation by leaving suddenly(갑자기 떠남으로서 어려운 상황을 피하다)"라고 설명했다.

"Although the company has faced financial difficulties, they do not intend to cut and run(그 기업이 재정적 어려움을 겪었음에도 불구하고, 그들은 도망갈 의향이 없다)."

메리암웹스터 사전은 'cut and run'을 "to leave quickly in order to avoid danger or trouble(위험이나 문제를 피하기 위해 재빨리 떠나다)"이라고 풀이했다.
