케임브릿지 사전은 'have an axe to grind'를 "to have a strong personal opinion about something that you want people to accept and that is the reason why you do something(사람들이 받아들이기를 바라는 어떤 것이 있고, 그래서 어떤 행위를 하게 되는 강력한 개인적 의견이 있다)"이라고 정의했다.

"Environmentalists have no political axe to grind - they just want to save the planet(환경보호주의자들은 정치적인 다른 속셈이 없다. 그들은 그저 이 행성을 구하고 싶은 것뿐이다)."

콜린스 사전은 'have an axe to grind'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If someone has an axe to grind, they are doing something for selfish reasons(have an axe to grind 하나면, 이기적인 이유로 무엇을 하는 것이다)." 인포멀(informal)하고 못마땅해하는(disapproval) 뉘앙스이다.
