[영어 공부] mingle(섞다, 사람들과 어울리다)

 

우리말도 '어울리다'에 '여럿이 서로 잘 조화되어 자연스럽게 보이다'라는 뜻과 '함께 사귀어 잘 지내거나 일정한 분위기에 끼어 들어 같이 휩싸이다'라는 뜻이 동시에 있다.

영어도 마찬가지다. 'mingle'이란 단어가 딱 이러하다.

케임브릿지 사전은 'mingle'의 두 가지 뜻을 이렇게 설명한다. 첫 번째, "to mix or combine, or be mixed or combined(섞거나 혼합하다, 또는 섞이거나 혼합되다)"

"The excitement of starting a new job is always mingled with a certain apprehension(새 일자리를 시작한다는 흥분감은 언제나 일종의 불안감과 뒤섞이곤 한다)."

"The two flavours mingle well(그 두 가지 맛은 서로 잘 어울린다)."

두 번째, "to move around and talk to other people at a social event(사교 행사에서 돌아다니며 다른 사람들과 이야기하다)"

"You've been talking to Roger all evening - you really ought to be mingling with the other guests(저녁 내내 로저하고만 이야기하고 있잖니. 다른 손님들이랑도 같이 어울려야 해)."

콜린스 사전은 이렇게 풀이해 놓았다. 첫 번째, "If things such as sounds, smells, or feelings mingle, they become mixed together but are usually still recognizable(소리, 냄새, 또는 감정이 mingle하면, 이것들은 하나로 섞였지만 대개 여전히 구분 가능한 상태임을 의미한다).

"Now the cheers and applause mingled in a single sustained roar(이제 함성 소리와 박수 소리는 하나가 되어 한결같은 포효로 변했다)."

"Foreboding mingled with his excitement(예감은 그의 흥분과 뒤섞였다)."

두 번째, "At a party, if you mingle with the other people there, you move around and talk to them(파티에서 그곳에 있는 다른 사람들과 mingle한다면, 돌아다니면서 그들과 이야기하는 것이다)."

"Go out of your way to mingle with others at the wedding(결혼식의 다른 사람들과 어울리려고 노력해 봐)."

"Guests ate and mingled(손님들은 식사 후 서로 이야기를 나누었다)."

"Alison mingled for a while and then went to where Douglas stood with John(앨리슨은 잠시 사람들과 어울렸다가 더글라스가 존과 같이 서 있는 곳으로 갔다)."
