케임브릿지 사전은 'be up against it'을 "to be having or likely to have serious problems or difficulties(심각한 문제나 어려움을 겪고 있거나 겪을 가능성이 높다)"라고 정의했다.

"With seven members of the team missing, Hull are going to be up against it(팀에 7명이나 빠져서, 헐은 궁지에 몰려 있을 것이다)."

"Many families are up against it, unable to afford even basic items(많은 가족들이 필수품도 사지 못할 정도로 경제적으로 궁지에 몰려 있다)."

콜린스 사전은 'up against it'을 "in difficulty; esp., in financial difficulty(어려운; 특히 경제적으로 어려운)"라고 설명했다.

옥스퍼드 학습자 사전은 'up against something/somebody'를 "having to deal with a difficult situation or opponent(어려운 상황 도는 적과 대처해야 하는)"라고 풀이했다.
