케임브릿지 사전은 'cardinal'을 "of great importance(가장 중요한)"라고 정의했다.

"cardinal rule(가장 중요한 규칙)"

"cardinal error(가장 기본적인 실수)"

"cardinal sin(가장 기본적인 죄)"

콜린스 사전은 'cardinal'을 이렇게 설명햇다. "A cardinal rule or quality is the one that is considered to be the most important(cardinal한 규칙이나 자질은 가장 중요한 것으로 여겨지는 것이다)." 격식을 차린(formal) 표현이다.

"As a salesperson, your cardinal rule is to do everything you can to satisfy a customer(판매원으로서 당신의 가장 기본적인 규칙은 고객을 만족시키기 위해 모든 것을 해야 한다는 것이다)." 

"Harmony, balance and order are cardinal virtues to the French(조화, 균형, 그리고 질서는 프랑스인에게 가장 중요한 덕목이다)." 

옥스퍼드 학습자 사전은 'cardinal'을 "most important; having other things based on it(가장 중요한; 다른 것들의 근본이 되는)"이라고 풀이했다.
