케임브릿지 사전은 'polarize'를 "to cause something, especially something that contains different people or opinions, to divide into two completely opposing groups(어떤 것, 특히 다른 사람들과 의견을 포함하는 것으로 하여금 두 개의 완전히 반대되는 그룹으로 나뉘게 하다)"라고 정의했다.

"The issue has polarized the nation(그 이슈는 전 국민들의 의견을 둘로 갈리게 했다)."

"Two developments have polarized the debate(두 가지 사건들이 그 논의의 양극화시켰다)."
