[영어 공부] blunder(실수 / 실수하다)

 

살면서 실수를 단 한 번도 하지 않는 사람이 있을까? 없을 것이다.

실수에도 여러 종류가 있는데, 가장 흔한 게 깊이 생각하지 않고 가볍게 했다가 좋지 않은 결과가 나오는 형태가 아닐까 한다.

이렇게 별 생각 없이 하는 실수를 영어로는 'blunder'라고 한다.

케임브릿지 사전은 'blunder'를 "a serious mistake, usually caused by not taking care or thinking(대개 주의를 기울이지 않거나 제대로 생각하지 않아서 생긴 심각한 실수)"라고 정의했다.

"He said that the tax was a major political blunder(그는 세금이 중대한 정치적 실수라고 말했다)."

"I made a blunder by getting his name wrong(나는 그의 이름을 잘못 말하는 실수를 저질렀다)."

'blunder'는 명사와 동사의 형태가 똑같다.

케임브릿지 사전이 정의한 'blunder'의 동사 의미는 "to make a serious mistake, usually because of not taking care or thinking(대개 주의를 기울이지 않거나 제대로 생각하지 않아서 심각한 실수를 저지르다)"이다.

Police blundered by not releasing more details about the case to focus public interest.

콜린스 사전은 일단 명사 형태의 의미를 이렇게 설명했다. "A blunder is a stupid or careless mistake(blunder는 바보 같거나 부주의한 실수이다)."

"I think he made a tactical blunder by announcing it so far ahead of time(나는 그가 서둘러 발표하는 전략상의 실수를 저질렀다고 생각해)."

동사의 의미는 이렇다. "If you blunder, you make a stupid or careless mistake(당신이 blunder 한다면, 바보 같거나 부주의한 실수를 저지르는 것이다)."

"No doubt I had blundered again(의심의 여지 없이 또 내가 실수를 저질렀군)."

"You're a blundering fool(이런 실수쟁이 바보 같으니라고)."

맥밀란 사전도 명사과 동사의 의미를 구분했다.

명사는 "a careless or embarrassing mistake(부주의하거나 부끄러운 실수)"

"Officials were accused of making a huge administrative blunder(공무원들은 행정상 큰 실수를 저질렀다는 혐의를 받았다)."

동사로 쓰이면 두 가지 의미가 있다. 첫 번째, "to make a careless or embarrassing mistake(부주의하거나 부끄러운 실수를 저지르다)"

"Government agents had blundered again and arrested the wrong man(정부 요원들이 또 다시 애꿏은 사람을 체포하는 실수를 저질렀다)."

두 번째, "to move or progress in a careless way, making mistakes or creating problems as you go(실수를 저지르거나 문제를 만들면서 부주의한 방식으로 움직이거나 나아가다)"

이럴 땐 보통 'blunder about/around/into'의 형태로 쓴다. "Someone was blundering about in the darkness(누군가 어둠 속에서 비척비척 걷고 있었다)"처럼.
