[영어 공부] constitution(체질)

 

'심즈 미디벌(The Sims Medieval)'을 플레이해 본 사람이라면 알겠지만, 여기에서 심의 특징으로 'weak constituon(허약한 체질)'을 선택하면 다른 심들보다 병에 더 잘 걸린다.

 

 

'constitution'에는 여러 가지 뜻이 있지만 사람의 몸과 관련해서 쓰이면 '체질'이라는 의미를 가진다. 보통 'have a strong/weak constitution'의 형태로 자주 쓴다.

케임브릿지 사전은 이런 의미의 'constitution'을 "the general state of someone's health(건강의 전반적인 상태)"라고 정의했다.

"He has a very strong constitution(그는 튼튼한 체질이다)."

콜린스 사전은 'constitution'을 이렇게 설명했다. "Your constitution is your health(constitution이란 건강이다)."

"He must have an extremely strong constitution(그는 분명히 엄청 튼튼한 체질인가 봐)."

"I've always had the constitution of an ox(난 언제나 황소처럼 건강한 체질이었다)."

맥밀란 사전은 'constitution'을 "your general physical condition, health, and strength(전반적인 신체 상태, 건강, 그리고 체력)"이라고 풀이했다.

"She has always had a strong constitution(그녀는 언제나 강인한 체질이었다)."

이렇게 '체질'의 의미로 쓰이는 'constitution'은 거의 언제나 단수 형태로 쓰이니 이 점도 기억하시라.
