아첨, 순수하거나 진실되지 않은 칭찬을 들으면 어떤 기분이 들까?

모르겠다. 내가 그런 말을 들을 정도로 권력이 있는 자리에 있어 본 적이 없어서... 크흡.

어쨌거나 (자신의 이익을 위해) 듣기 좋은 말로 꾀거나 구슬리는 걸 wheedle이라고 한다.

케임브릿지 사전은 'wheedle'을 "to try to persuade someone to do something or give you something by praising them or being intentionally charming(상대를 칭찬하거나 상대에게 의도적으로 매력적으로 굴어서 상대가 무엇을 하거나 당신에게 무엇을 주도록 설득하려고 노력하다)"이라고 정의한다. 이에서도 느껴지듯이 이 단어에는 '못마땅해하는(disapproving)' 뉘앙스가 강하다.

"She's one of those children who can wheedle you into giving her anything she wants(그녀는 당신을 구슬려서 무엇이든 자신이 원하는 것을 당신에게 받아 낼 수 있는 그런 어린애들 중 하나이다)." 

"She wasn't invited, but somehow she managed to wheedle her way in(그녀는 초대받지 않았지만 어떤 수를 썼는지 좋은 말로 구슬려서 그곳에 들어오는 데 성공했다)." 

"I tried different approaches - I wheedled, threatened, demanded, cajoled(나는 다양한 접근법을 시도해 봤다. 구슬려 보기도 하고, 협박해 보기도 하고, 요구해 보기도 하고, 꼬드겨 보기도 하는 등등)."

콜린스 사전은 'wheedle'을 이렇게 설명한다. "If you say that someone wheedles, you mean that they try to persuade someone to do or give them what they want, for example by saying nice things that they do not mean(누군가가 wheedle 한다고 말한다면, 예를 들어 진심이 아닌 좋은 말을 함으로써 상대가 자신이 원하는 어떤 것을 하거나 자신에게 주도록 설득하려 노력하는 것이다)."

"Cross decided to beg and wheedle a bit(크로스는 빌면서 조금 구슬려 보기로 결정했다)."

"He managed to wheedle his way into the offices(그는 꾀는 말로 공직에 오르는 데 성공했다)." 

"...an opportunity to wheedle more money out of Wilson(윌슨을 꾀어서 더 많은 돈을 받아 낼 기회)."

맥밀란 사전은 'wheedle'을 "to persuade someone using tricks, lies, or flattery (=praise that is not sincere)(속임수, 거짓말, 또는 아첨(=진실되지 않은 칭찬)을 이용해 누군가를 설득하다)"라고 풀이했다.
