2000년대 초반에 엄청 인기 있었던 팝펑크 밴드 중에 'Busted'라는 밴드가 있다(내 나이 또래들은 기억할 듯).

그 밴드의 히트곡 중 하나가 "Crashed the Wedding"이다. 내용인즉, 자기 여자 친구의 아버지가 자기를 못마땅해해서 결혼은 못했는데, 그 여자 친구가 다른 남자랑 결혼할 때 초대도 받지 않은 채 결혼식에 갔다(crashed the wedding) 것.

이렇게 초대도 받지 않은 자리에 가는 것을 'gatecrash'라고 한다.

케임브릿지 사전은 'gatecrash'를 "to go to a party or other event when you have not been invited(초대받지 않았는데도 파티나 기타 이벤트에 가다)"라고 정의했다.

"He decided to gatecrash the wedding(그는 초대받지 않은 결혼식에 가기로 결정했다)."

콜린스 사전은 'gatecrash'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If someone gatecrashes a party or other social event, they go to it, even though they have not been invited(누군가 파티나 다른 사교적 이벤트에 gatecrash 한다면, 초대받지 않았음에도 불구하고 거기에 가는 것이다).

"Scores of people tried desperately to gatecrash the party(수십 명의 사람들이 초대도 받지 않고 그 파티에 참석하려고 간절하게 애를 썼다)."

"He had gatecrashed but he was with other people we knew and there was no problem(그는 초대받지 않고도 참석했지만 그는 우리가 아는 다른 사람과 함께하여 문제는 없었다)."

맥밀란 사전은 'gatecrash'를 "to go to a party or other social event although you have not been invited(초대받지 않았음에도 불구하고 파티나 다른 사교적 이벤트에 가다)"라고 풀이했다.
