[영어 공부] the/a glare of sth(~의 이목[눈길])

 

시험장처럼 조용한 곳에서 뭘 떨어뜨렸다든지 큰 소리가 나면 모든 사람의 눈길이 다 소리의 근원지로 향한다.

이렇게 딱히 내가 원치 않을 때 남의 시선을 한몸에 받거나 이목, 눈길을 받는 걸 'the/a glare of sth'이라고 표현할 수 있다. 대개 그 관심을 주는 대상으로 뉴스나 TV 같은 매스컴이 자주 쓰인다.

케임브릿지 사전은 'the/a glare of sth'을 "an occasion when something receives a very large amount of public attention(어떤 것이 대중의 아주 많은 관심을 받게 되는 상황)"이라고 정의했다.

"The actor's wedding took place in the full glare of publicity/the media(그 배우의 결혼식은 매스컴/미디어의 관심을 한껏 끌면서 진행되었다)."

콜린스 사전은 'the glare of publicity/the media etc'를 "attention from newspapers and television, especially when you do not want it(특히 원치 않는, 신문과 텔레비전에게서 받는 관심)"이라고 설명했다. 

"Their relationship will be severely tested in the full glare of media publicity(그들의 관계는 매스컴의 이목이 집중되면서 크게 시험을 받을 것이다)."

롱맨 사전은 'the glare of publicity/the media/public scrutiny etc'를 "the full attention of newspapers, television etc, especially when you do not want it(당신이 원하지 않는, 신문과 텔레비전 등의 깊은 관심)"이라고 풀이했다.
