[영어 공부] marshal((특정 목적을 위해 사람이나 생각 등을) 모으다, 집결시키다)

 

영어에는 명사 단어가 동사로 쓰이면 다른 뜻을 갖는 경우가 종종 있다. 'marshal'이 그런 경우 중 하나이다.

명사로 쓸 경우 '(영국 육·공군의) 원수'라는 뜻이지만, 동사로 쓰면 '특정 목적을 위해 사람이나 생각 등을) 모으다, 집결시키다'라는 뜻이 된다.

케임브릿지 사전은 'marshal'이라는 동사를 "to bring together or organize people or things in order to achieve a particular aim(특정한 목표를 성취하기 위해 사람이나 사물을 모으거나 조직하다)"이라고 정의했다.

"The fighting in the city followed reports of the rebels marshalling their forces in the countryside(도시 내에서의 전투이후 반군이 시골 지역에서 군대를 모으고 있다는 보고가 잇따랐다)." 

"The company is marshalling its forces/resources for a long court case(그 기업은 긴 법정 사건을 위해 세력/자원을 조직하고 있다)." 

"They had marshalled an armada of 1,000 boats to help clear up the oil(그들은 기름을 제거하기 위해 1천 대의 보트 함대를 조직했다)." 

"It is unlikely that the rebels will be able to marshal as much firepower as the government troops(반군이 정부의 군대에 맞먹는 화력을 모으기가 가능할 것 같지 않다)."

콜린스 사전은 'marshal'을 이렇게 설명했다. "If you marshal people or things, you gather them together and arrange them for a particular purpose(사람이나 사물을 marshal 한다면, 특별한 목적을 위해 그들을 모아서 조직하는 것이다)." 

"Richard was marshalling the doctors and nurses, showing them where to go(리차드는 의사와 간호사들을 모아서 어디로 가야 할지 알려 주고 있었다)."

"...the way in which Britain marshalled its economic and political resources to protect its security interests(영국이 선취 특권을 보호하기 위해 경제와 정치적 자원을 조직한 방식)."

맥밀란 사전은 'marshal'을 "to bring people or things together and organize them so that they can be used in an effective way(효율적인 방식으로 쓰일 수 있도록 사람이나 사물을 모아서 조직하다)"라고 풀이했다.

"Western powers are marshalling their military resources(서구 권력은 군 자원을 조직하고 있다)."

"The government hopes to marshal support for the ban(정부는 그 금지령을 지원하는 데 도움이 되는 것을 모으기를 바라고 있다)."
