[영어 공부] dial down/back(완화하다, 누그러뜨리다)

 

얼마 전에 요즘 애들은 다이얼을 돌려서 전화를 거는 방식의 전화기를 어떻게 쓰는지 모른다고 해서 충격받았다.

나 어릴 적에는 그런 다이얼식 전화기를 썼는데...ㅠㅠ

그럼 영어 원어민들도 어린 친구들은 'dial down'이라는 표현의 'dial'이 어디서 온 건지 모를까? 

'dial down'은 다이얼을 아래로 돌리듯, 어떤 것을 '완화하다, 누그러뜨리다'라는 뜻이다.

케임브릿지 사전은 'dial sth down'을 "to make something less forceful or extreme(어떤 것을 덜 강력하거나 덜 극단적으로 만들다)"이라고 정의했다. 'dial sth back'이라고도 한다.

"A stage actor may need to dial down the energy for the intimacy of the movie camera(무대 배우는 영화 카메라의 친밀함을 위해 에너지를 조금 줄일 필요가 있다.)"

"We must find a way to dial back the violence in our cities(우리는 우리 도시에서 폭력을 줄일 방법을 찾아야 한다)."

콜린스 사전은 'dial down'을 "to reduce or become reduced(줄이거나 줄어들다)"라고 설명했다.

"to dial down an argument(논쟁을 가라앉히다)"

맥밀란 사전은 'dial down'의 뜻을 두 개로 나눠서 풀이했다.

첫째, "to use the controls on a machine to reduce the level of heat, light or sound(열, 빛, 소리의 레벨을 줄이기 위해 기계의 통제판을 사용하다)"

"Put insulation around the heater and the pipes and dial down the thermostat(히터와 파이프 주위에 단열 처리를 하고 온도 조절 장치를 낮춰라)."

둘째, "to reduce the level of tension or intensity in a situation(어떤 상황의 긴장감이나 격렬함의 레벨을 낮추다)"

"The two leaders have agreed that they need to dial down the extent to which their parties pick public fights with each other(두 지도자들은 그들의 당이 서로 공적인 싸움을 벌이는 범위를 줄일 필요가 있다는 데 동의했다)."

"With any exercise, dial it down a level from what you think you can accomplish(어떤 운동이든, 당신이 성취할 수 있다고 생각하는 수준으로 낮추어 조절해라)."
