[영어 공부] be the butt of a joke/criticism(농담/비판의 대상이 되다)

 

보통 'butt'이라고 하면 엉덩이나 담배 꽁초 부분을 가리키는 거라고 생각하는데, 물론 그것도 맞는 말이다.

그런데 'butt'에는 '뭉툭한 부분'이라는 뜻도 있다. 그래서 'be the butt of a joke/criticism'이라고 하면 농담이나 비판의 대상이 된다는 뜻이다.

케임브릿지 사전은 'be the butt of sb's jokes'를 "to be a person who is joked about or laughed at(농담의 대상이 되는 사람 또는 비웃음을 당하는 사람이 되다)"이라고 정의했다. 

"He was sick of being the butt of their jokes(그는 그들의 농담거리가 되는 게 지겨웠다)."

롱맨 사전은 'be the butt of something'을 "to be the person or thing that other people often make jokes about(다른 사람들이 자주 농담을 하는 대상(사람/사물)이 되다)"이라고 설명했다. 

"Paul quickly became the butt of everyone’s jokes(폴은 얼마 지나지 않아 모든 이들의 농담거리가 되었다)."

맥밀란 사전은 'be the butt of something'을 이렇게 풀이했다. "if you are the butt of jokes or criticism, people often make jokes about you or criticize you(당신이 농담이나 비판의 be the butt of 라면, 사람들은 자주 당신에 대해 농담하거나 비판하는 것이다)"

"He became the butt of everyone’s silly jokes(그는 모든 이들의 실없는 농담거리가 되었다)."
