[영어 공부] around/round the corner(아주 가까운)

 

추석이 정말 코앞으로 다가왔다. 이렇게 무엇이 시간상으로나, 물리적으로나 '아주 가깝다'라고 말하고 싶을 때, 'around/round the corner'라고 말할 수 있다.

케임브릿지 사전은 '(just) around the corner'를 "not far away, or going to happen soon(멀지 않은, 또는 곧 일어날 예정인)"이라고 정의했다.

"There's a great restaurant just around the corner(요 근처에 아주 맛있는 레스토랑이 있어)."

"I'm feeling a little depressed at the moment, but I'm sure good times are just around the corner(나는 지금은 좀 우울한데, 곧 좋은 날이 올 거라고 확신해)."

콜린스 사전은 'around/round the corner'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you say that something is around the corner, you mean that it is very near. In British English, you can also say that something is round the corner(무엇이 around the corner라고 말하면, 그것이 아주 가깝다는 뜻이다. 영국식 영어에서는 또한 'round the corner'라고 말할 수 있다)."

"My new place is just around the corner(내 새집은 바로 코앞에 있어)."

맥밀란 사전은 'around the corner'의 뜻을 두 가지로 나누어 풀이했다.

첫 번째, "not far away(멀지 않은)". 물리적으로 가깝다는 의미다.

"The kids go to school just around the corner(아이들은 근처에 있는 학교에 다닌다)."

두 번째, "coming very soon(아주 금방 일어나는)". 이건 시간적으로 가깝다는 의미다.

"It feels like spring is just around the corner(봄이 코앞인 것 같은 느낌이야)."
