[영어 공부] high ground(고지, 우위)

 

우리말에서도 '고지(를 점하다/탈환하다)' 같은 말을 종종 쓰는데, 이걸 영어로 'high ground'라고 한다.

콜린스 사전은 'high ground'를 이렇게 정의했다.  "If a person or organization has the high ground in an argument or dispute, that person or organization has an advantage(어떤 사람 또는 단체가 논쟁 또는 토론에서 have the high ground 한다면, 그 사람 또는 단체가 우세하다는 뜻이다)." 특히 저널리즘(journalism)에서 많이 쓴다. 

"The President must seek to regain the high ground in the political debate(대통령은 이번 정치 토론에서 우위를 재탈환하기를 추구해야 한다)." 

"How do we recapture the intellectual high ground?(어떻게 우리가 지적인 우위를 점할 수 있을까?)"

맥밀란 사전은 'high ground'를 "the better position gained in an argument or competition by having more authority, support, or other advantages(더 많은 권위, 지지, 또는 다른 강점을 가짐으로써 논쟁 또는 경쟁에서 차지한 더 좋은 입장)"라고 설명했다.

"The French government is trying to take the moral high ground(프랑스 정부는 도덕적 우위를 점하려고 한다)."

위의 예문에 쓰인 것과 비슷하게 'claim the moral high ground'라고 쓸 수도 있는데, 케임브릿지는 이를 "to say that you are morally better than someone else(당신이 다른 사람보다 도덕적으로 낫다고 말하다)"라고 풀이했다.
