동서고금, 남녀노소를 막론하고 사람은 늘 사랑에 빠진다. 그래서 어떤 언어든 사랑을 이야기하는 단어/표현이 있다.

영어에는 'carry a torch'라는 표현이 있는데, 누군가를 짝사랑하거나 혼자 몰래 좋아한다는 뜻이다.

케임브릿지 사전은 'carry a torch'를 "to be in love with someone(누군가를 사랑하다)"이라고 정의했다. 

"Terry has been carrying a torch for Liz for years, but she seems not to notice(테리는 리즈를 몇 년간 (짝)사랑해 왔으나, 그녀는 눈치를 채지 못하는 것 같다)."

콜린스 사전은 'carry a torch'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you say that someone is carrying a torch for someone else, you mean that they secretly admire them or love them(누군가 다른 사람을 위해 carry a torch 한다면, 남몰래 그들을 흠모하거나 사랑한다는 뜻이다)." 

"He has always carried a torch for Barbara(그는 언제나 바바라를 짝사랑했다)."

롱맨 사전은 'carry a torch'를 "to love someone romantically who does not love you(당신을 사랑하지 않는 사람을 로맨틱한 감정을 가지고 사랑하다)"라고 풀이했다.

"He’s been carrying a torch for your sister for years(그는 네 누이를 몇 년 동안이고 짝사랑해 왔어)."

'carry a torch'와 'carry the torch', 부정관사/정관사 차이를 조심하시라.

'carry the torch'라고 하면 횃불을 들고 민중을 이끄는 혁명의 여신처럼(콜드플레이(Coldplay)의 "Viva La Vida" 앨범 커버로도 유명한 그 그림처럼) 사람들을 특히 정치에서 이끈다는 뜻이 되어 완전히 의미가 달라진다.
