[영어 공부] smooth sth out(곤란을 타개하다, 어려운 일을 해결하다)

 

옷에 주름이 지듯이, 가끔 인생도 주름이 지는 듯한 느낌을 받을 때가 있다. 그럴 때는 옷을 빨거나 잘 다려서 주름을 펴듯이, 어려운 일을 해결해서 얼굴의 주름도 펴야 한다.

이렇게 어려운 일을 해결하거나 곤란한 일을 타개하는 것을 'smooth out'이라고 한다. 주름을 편다고 할 때 그 'smooth out'에서 방금 말한 뜻이 파생되어 나왔다.

케임브릿지 사전은 'smooth sth out'을 "to reduce the difficulties or changes in a process or situation(어떤 과정이나 상황에서 어려운 일이나 변화를 줄이다)"이라고 정의했다.

"By investing small amounts regularly, you can smooth out the effects of sudden rises and falls in the stock market(정기적으로 적은 돈을 투자함으로써, 주식 시장의 갑작스러운 상승과 폭락의 영향을 줄일 수 있다)." 

콜린스 사전은 'smooth out'을 이렇게 설명했다. "If you smooth out a problem or difficulty, you solve it, especially by talking to the people concerned(문제나 어려움을 smooth out 한다면, 특히 관련된 사람과 이야기를 나눔으로써 해결하는 것이다)."

"Baker was smoothing out differences with European allies(베이커는 유럽 동맹국들과의 차이를 조율하고 있었다)."

"It's O.K. I smoothed things out(괜찮아. 내가 해결했어)."

메리암웹스터 사전은 'smooth out'을 "to make (something) easier by removing or dealing with problems(문제를 해결하거나 처리함으로써 어떤 것을 더 쉽게 만들다)"라고 풀이했다. 

"We will smooth out the election process by next year(우리는 내년까지 선거 과정을 쉽게 만들 것이다)."

"She tried to smooth things out with her daughter-in-law, but the damage was done(그녀는 며느리와의 관계를 부드럽게 해 보려고 노력했지만, 피해는 이미 저질러진 후였다)."
