케임브릿지 사전은 'in name only'를 이렇게 정의했다. "If a situation exists in name only, it is officially described that way, although that description is not completely accurate(어떤 상황이 in name only 하게만 존재한다면, 공식적으로는 그렇게 묘사되지만, 실제로 그 묘사가 전적으로 정확하지는 않은 것이다)" 

"A large percentage of the population is Catholic, though many are so in name only(그곳 인구의 많은 비율은 카톨릭이지만, 많은 이들이 명목상으로만 그러하다)." 

콜린스 사전은 'in name only'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you say that a situation exists in name only, you mean that it does not have the status or position that it claims to have(어떤 상황이 in name only 하게만 존재한다면, 그것이 가지고 있따고 존재하는 상황이나 지위를 가지고 있지 않다는 뜻이다)." 

"Many of the groups exist in name only(많은 그룹들이 명목상으로만 존재한다)." 

"He is commander-in-chief in name only(그는 명목상으로만 총사령관이다)." 

맥밀란 사전은 'in name only'를 이렇게 풀이했다. "something that exists in name only has an official name, but has none of the qualities that you think of when you hear that name(in name only 하게만 존재하는 것은 공식적 이름을 가지고 있지만, 그 이름을 들었을 때 생각하는 자질들은 전혀 가지고 있지 않은 것이다)." 

"Theirs was a marriage in name only(그들의 결혼은 명목상에 불과했다)."
