[영어 공부] with a vengeance(맹렬히)

 

비가 미친 듯 쏟아져서 '폭우'라고 불러도 될 정도일 때가 있다. 그럴 때 'It rained with a vengeance(비가 맹렬히 쏟아졌다).'라고 할 수 있다.

'with a vengeance'라고 하면 무언가가 정말 미친듯이, 말도 안 되게, 맹렬히, 심한 정도로 일어났다는 뜻이다.

케임브릿지 사전은 'with a vengeance'를 "with great force or extreme energy(강력한 힘 또는 극한의 에너지로)"라고 정의했다.

"He's been working with a vengeance over the past few weeks to make up for lost time(그는 잃어버린 시간을 만회하려고 지난 몇 주간 미친듯이 일하고 있다)." 

"Flared trousers are back with a vengeance (= very popular again) this summer(플레어 바지가 올여름 다시 크게 유행하고 있다)." 

콜린스 사전은 'with a vengeance'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you say that something happens with a vengeance, you are emphasizing that it happens to a much greater extent than was expected(어떤 일이 with a vengeance 하며 일어난다면, 예상한 것보다 훨씬 더 큰 범위로 일어난다는 사실을 강조하는 것이다)."

"It began to rain again with a vengeance(다시 미친듯이 폭우가 쏟아지기 시작했다)." 

맥밀란 사전은 'with a vengeance'를 "used for emphasizing that something happens in an extreme way or with a lot of force(어떤 일이 극단적으로, 또는 큰 힘을 가지고 일어난다는 사실을 강조할 때 쓰는 말)"라고 풀이했다.

"The disease came back with a vengeance(그 병은 다시 맹렬히 유행 중이다)."
