[영어 공부] come under fire(비난을 받다, 빈축을 사다)

 

영어 동요에는 "막대기와 돌멩이는 내 뼈를 부술 수도 있지만 말은 그렇게 못 한다(Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never break me)"라는 가사가 있지만, 사실 말로 폭력을 당하는 것도 신체적 폭력만큼이나 아프다.

얼마나 아팠으면 '비난받는' 것을 화력 무기(fire)의 공격을 받는 것에 비유해서 'come under fire'라고 할까.

케임브릿지 사전은 'come under fire'를 "to be criticized(비난받다)"라고 정의했다.

"The government has come under fire for its decision to close the mines(정부는 광산을 폐광하려는 결정으로 빈축을 샀다)."

콜린스 사전은 'come under fire'를 "to be strongly criticized(강력하게 비난받다)"라고 설명했다.

"The president's plan first came under fire from critics who said he didn't include enough spending cuts(대통령의 결정은 비평가들에게 충분한 경비 삭감을 포함하지 않았다는 비난을 받았다)."

맥밀란 사전은 'come under fire'를 "to be criticized(비난받다)"라고 풀이했다.

"The government will come under fire again when the latest crime figures are released(최근 범죄 관련 수치가 발표되면 정부는 다시 비난을 살 것이다)."
