[영어 공부] stellar(뛰어난)

 

'stellar'는 원래 '별의, 별과 관련된'이라는 뜻이지만 인포멀(informal)하게 쓰이면 '뛰어난, 아주 좋은'이라는 뜻이다.

케임브릿지 사전은 'stellar'를 이렇게 정의했다. "Stellar people or activities are of an extremely high standard(stellar 한 사람이나 활동은 극히 높은 수준에 달한 것이다)."

"a stellar performance/player/team(뛰어난 성과/선수/팀)"

콜린스 사전은 'stellar'를 이렇게 설명했다. "A stellar person or thing is considered to be very good(stellar 한 사람이나 사물은 아주 좋다고 여겨지는 것이다)."

"...a stellar education at Eton and Oxford(이튼과 옥스포드에서 받을 수 있는 최고의 교육)."

"The French companies are registering stellar profits(프랑스 기업들이 높은 수익을 올리고 있다)."

맥밀란 사전은 'stellar'를 이렇게 풀이했다. "a stellar performance, achievement, piece of work etc is extremely good(stellar 한 성과, 업적, 일 등은 지극히 좋은 것이다)."
