[영어 공부] bland(특징 없는, (맛이) 자극적이지 않은, 별다른 맛이 안 나는)

 

양상추만큼 'bland'한 채소가 또 있을까? 오이는 호불호가 무척 강하게 갈릴 만큼 향과 식감이 독특하고, 가지도 식감 면에서 분명한 특징이 있다.

그런데 양상추는... 그냥 신선할 때 아삭하다는 거 말고 딱히 '맛'이라 부를 만한 게 없지 않나? 이렇게 별로 특징이 없고 맛이 없는 것을 'bland'하다고 한다.

케임브릿지 사전은 'bland'를 "not having a strong taste or character or not showing any interest or energy(진한 맛이나 강한 특징이 없는, 또는 흥미나 에너지가 없는)"라고 정의했다.

"I find chicken a little bland(닭 요리에서 맹물 맛이 나네)."

"Pop music these days is so bland(요즘 팝 음악은 별 개성이 없어)."

콜린스 사전은 'bland'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you describe someone or something as bland, you mean that they are rather dull and unexciting(누군가 또는 무엇을 bland 하다고 묘사한다면, 그(것)들이 따분하고 재미있지 않다는 뜻이다)."

"Serle has a blander personality than Howard(설은 하워드보다 더 따분한 성격이다)."

"It sounds like an advert: easy on the ear but bland and forgettable(그건 광고처럼 들린다. 듣기는 좋지만 별 특징이 없고 곧바로 잊어버리게 된다)."

"...a bland, 12-storey office block(별 특징이 없는 12층짜리 사무실 건물)." 

맥밀란 사전은 'bland'의 뜻을 이렇게 풀이했다. 첫 번째, "not having a strong taste and therefore not very interesting to eat(진한 맛이 없어서 맛보기에 재미있지 않은)."

두 번째, "not interesting, exciting, or original, and therefore boring(흥미롭거나 신나거나 독창적이지 않고 따라서 지루한)."

"She had pleasant but rather bland features(그녀는 예쁘지만 이목구비에 별 특징이 없다)."
