[영어 공부] in your own right(자기 혼자 노력으로)

 

'금수저'로 태어나서가 아니라 정말 순수하게 자신의 노력으로 부자가 된다면 참 뿌듯하고 기분이 좋을 것이다.

연줄이나 다른 사람의 후광 등으로 인한 게 아니라 자신의 노력, 재능 등으로 어떤 자리에 올랐거나 어떤 직업을 가지게 되었다면 'in your own right'라는 표현을 쓸 수 있다.

케임브릿지 사전은 'in your own right'를 이렇게 정의했다. "If you have a position in your own right, you have earned it or got it by yourself and not because of anyone else(어떤 지위를 in your own right 해서 누리고 있다면, 스스로 얻어냈거나 다른 사람이 아니라 스스로 노력해서 쟁취한 것이다)."

"She's a millionaire in her own right(그녀는 자수성가한 백만장자이다)."

콜린스 사전은 'in one's own right'를 "If someone is a successful or respected person in their own right, they are successful or respected because of their own efforts and talents rather than those of the people they are closely connected with(누군가가 in one's own right 하여 성공했거나 존경받는 사람이라면, 그 사람과 가깝게 연결된 사람들의 노력이나 재능보다는 본인의 노력과 재능으로 성공했거나 존경받는 것이다)."

"Although now a celebrity in her own right, the actress knows the difficulties of living in the shadow of her famous older sister(그 여배우는 스스로 노력해 연예인이 되었지만, 유명한 언니의 그늘에서 사는 것이 얼마나 힘든지 안다)."

맥밀란 사전은 'in your own right'를 "as a result of your own ability, achievements, qualifications etc and not because of anyone else(다른 사람 때문이 아니라 스스로의 능력, 성취, 자격 등의 결과로)"라고 풀이했다.

"Her father’s a well-known author, but she’s an excellent writer in her own right(그녀의 아버지는 잘 알려진 저자이지만, 그녀는 스스로 노력해 뛰어난 작가가 되었다)."
