[영어 공부] in the wake of sth(~의 뒤를 좇아, ~에 뒤이어, ~의 결과로)

 

'wake'에는 '배가 지나간 자리, 물건이 지나간 흔적'이라는 뜻이 있다. 따라서 'in the wake of sth'이라고 하면 어떤 것이 지나간 자리를 쫓아가듯 '~의 뒤를 좇아, ~에 뒤이어, ~의 결과로' 어떤 일이 일어난다는 뜻이다.

케임브릿지 사전은 'in the wake of sth'을 이렇게 정의했다. "If something happens in the wake of something else, it happens after and often because of it(어떤 것이 in the wake of something으로 일어난다면, 그 이후에, 그리고 대개는 그것 때문에 일어나는 것이다)"

"Airport security was extra tight in the wake of yesterday's bomb attacks(어제의 폭탄 공격 이후 공항 보안이 특히 강화되었다)."
