케임브릿지 사전은 'cede'를 "to allow someone else to have or own something, especially unwillingly or because you are forced to do so(특히 마지못해, 또는 그래야 하기 때문에, 상대에게 무엇을 가지거나 소유하게 허락하다)"라고 정의했다.

"Hong Kong was ceded to Britain after the Opium War(아편 전쟁 이후 홍콩은 영국에게 양도되었다)."

콜린스 사전은 'cede'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If someone in a position of authority cedes land or power to someone else, they let them have the land or power, often as a result of military or political pressure(권력의 자리에 있는 사람이 땅이나 권력을 다른 사람에게 cede 한다면, 대개 군 또는 정치적 압박의 결과로 그 땅이나 권력을 양도하는 것이다)." 격식을 차린(formal) 표현이다.
