가끔 차가 어디에 받히면 그곳이 아래 사진처럼 움푹 들어가게 된다.

 

 

이렇게 움푹 들어간 곳을 'dent'라고 하는데, 'make/put a dent'는 어떤 것, 특히 돈의 양을 줄인다는 뜻이다.

케임브릿지 사전은 'make/put a dent in sth'을 "to reduce an amount of money(돈의 양을 감소시키다)"라고 정의했다.

"The holiday made a big dent in our savings(그 휴가 때문에 우리 저금이 꽤 깨졌다)."

맥밀란 사전은 'make a dent in something'을 "to reduce the amount of something(무엇의 양을 줄이다)"이라고 설명했다.

메리암웹스터 사전은 'make/put a dent'를 "to decrease something slightly or to make something somewhat weaker(어떤 것을 약간 감소시키거나 조금 약해지게 만들다)"라고 풀이했다.

"We tried our best to fix the problem, but nothing we did seems to have made a dent(우리는 그 문제를 고치려고 최선을 다했지만, 우리가 한 그 어떤 일도 그 문제를 줄이지는 못하는 것 같다)."

이 사전은 위에서 본 것처럼 'make/put a dent in sth'의 형태로 자주 쓰인다고도 적어 놨다.
