[영어 공부] spruce sb/sth up(~을 단장하다, ~의 맵시를 내다)

 

여름이 가까워지고 있는 것 같다. 여름에는 여름만의 멋이 있으니 이제 그 멋을 챙길 때이다.

어떤 것 또는 누군가의 겉모습을 단정하거나 깔끔하게 만드는 것을 'spruce (sb/sth) up'이라는 구 동사(phrasal verb)를 이용해 표현할 수 있다.

케임브릿지 사전은 'spruce sb/sth up'을 "to make someone or something cleaner and tidier or to improve his, her, or its appearance generally(누군가 또는 무엇을 더 깨끗하고 깔끔하게 만들거나 대체로 그 사람 또는 그것의 외양을 개선시키다)"라고 정의했다. 

"I thought I'd have a shave and generally spruce myself up for the interview(나는 면접을 위해 면도를 하고 전체적으로 꽃단장 좀 할까 했다)."

"They've employed an advertising agency to spruce up the company image(그들은 기업 이미지를 산뜻하게 만들기 위해 광고 에이전시를 고용했다)."

콜린스 사전은 'spruce up'을 이렇게 설명한다. "If something is spruced up, its appearance is improved. If someone is spruced up, they have made themselves look very smart(어떤 것이 spruced up 되었다면, 그 겉모습이 개선된 것이다. 누군가 spruced up 했다면 자신이 아주 깔끔해 보이게 한 것이다)."

"Many buildings have been spruced up(많은 건물들이 새단장되었다)."

"In the evening we spruced ourselves up a bit and went out for dinner(저녁에 우리는 깔끔하게 꾸미고 저녁 식사를 하러 나갔다)."

메리암웹스터 사전은 'spruce up'을 "to make (someone or something) look cleaner, neater, or more attractive((누군가 또는 어떤 것을) 더 깨끗하거나, 단정하거나, 매력적으로 보이게 만들다)"라고 풀이한다.

"We spruced up the room with a fresh coat of paint(우리는 새로 페인트칠을 해서 그 방을 새단장했다)."
