[영어 공부] lump sb/sth together(~을 묶어서 생각하다)

 

내 친구 중에 경찰이 있는데, 내가 보기엔 정말 자기 일에도 열심이고 참 참한 청년이다.

경찰 같은 공무원에 대해 하는 일도 없이 돈만 받아 가는, 게으르고 불친절한 사람이라는 인식이 널리 퍼져 있는데, 내 친구는 그런 사람들에 도매급으로 넘겨져 같이 팔리기엔 너무 아까운, 정말 좋은 경찰이라고 생각한다.

이렇게 무엇을 나눠서 생각하지 않고 그냥 같은 급, 같은 것으로 묶어서 생각하고 대하는 걸 'lump sb/sth together'라고 한다.

케임브릿지 사전은 'lump sb/sth together'를 "to put different groups together and think about them or deal with them in the same way(다른 그룹들을 하나로 묶어서 같은 방식으로 생각하거나 처리하다)"라고 정의했다.

"All the children are lumped together in one class, regardless of their ability(모든 아이들은 능력과 상관없이 한 학급으로 묶였다)."

콜린스 사전은 'lump together'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If a number of different people or things are lumped together, they are considered as a group rather than separately(많은 수의 다른 사람들 또는 사물 등이 lumped together 되면, 따로보다는 한 그룹으로 여겨지는 것이다)."

"Police officers, bankers and butchers are all lumped together in the service sector(경찰, 은행가, 그리고 푸주한은 모두 서비스업으로 묶인다)."

"They are lumped together with the troublemakers and basically written off(그들은 모두 말썽꾼으로 묶여서 기본적으로 실패자로 여겨졌다)."

맥밀란 사전은 'lump'를 "to put people or things into the same group, although they do not really belong together(사람이나 사물을, 비록 실제로는 같이 속하지 않더라도, 같은 그룹에 넣다)"라고 풀이했다.

"They’re lumping together all of these children(그들은 이 모든 아이들을 하나로 묶어서 보고 있다)."
