[영어 공부] (All) In good time(머지 않아, 곧, 때가 되면)

 

사실 나도 성격이 급한 편이다. 그래서 기다리는 걸 잘 못한다.

그래도 요즘엔 너무 성마르게 무엇을 판단하거나 짜증 내지 않으려고 노력하고 있다. "때가 되면 음식이 알아서 나오겠지" 같은 말로 스스로를 달래며.

'때가 되면, 곧, 머지 않아'는 영어로 '(all) in good time'이라고 표현할 수 있다.

케임브릿지 사전은 'all in good time'을 "used to tell someone to be patient because the thing they are eager for will happen when the time is right(어떤 사람이 열렬히 기다리는 것이 적당한 때에 이루어질 것이기 때문에 참을성을 가지라고 말할 때 쓰인다)"

"Be patient, you'll hear the result all in good time(좀 참아, 곧 결과가 나올 거야)."

콜린스 사전은 '(all) in good time'을 이렇게 설명한다. "If you tell someone that something will happen in good time or all in good time, you are telling them to be patient because it will happen eventually(누군가에게 어떤 일이 in good time 또는 all in good time에 일어날 거라고 말하면, 이는 결국에 일어날 일이기 때문에 참을성을 가지라고 말하는 것이다)."

"There will be exercises that you can't do at first. You will get to them in good time(처음엔 하지 못하는 운동들이 있을 거야. 그것들은 머지 않아 하게 될 거고)."

"'I can't wait to be grown up.'—'All in good time.'('어서 어른이 되고 싶어요.'—'때가 곧 올 거야.')"

맥밀란 사전은 'all in good time'을 "used for telling someone to wait for something and not try to make you hurry(무언가를 위해 기다리고 서두르지 말라고 말할 때 쓰인다)"라고 풀이했다.
