[영어 공부] on the cusp of sth(~이 시작되는 지점에 있는)

 

나는 지금 내 인생에서 중요한 터닝 포인트에 있다는 느낌이다.

내 뒤로는 그간의 내가 쌓아 온 성취들, 내가 이룬 성공들이있고, 내 앞에는 새로운 커리어와 기회가 내 앞에 펼쳐져 있다.

이렇게 두 가지 것의 사이, 한 가지 상태에서 새로운 다른 것으로 넘어가는 중간 지점을 'cusp'라고 한다.

그래서 'on the cusp of sth'이라고 하면 그것의 새로 시작되는 지점에 있다는 뜻이다.

케임브릿지 사전은 'cusp'를 "the dividing line between two very different things(두 가지 다른 것 사이의 경계선)"라고 정의했다.

"on the cusp of adulthood(성인의 경계선에 선)"

콜린스 사전은 'on the cusp'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you say that someone or something is on the cusp, you mean they are between two states, or are about to be in a particular state(누군가 또는 어떤 것이 on the cusp라고 하면, 그것(또는 그들)이 두 가지 상태의 가운데에, 또는 특정한 상태에 들어가게 된다는 뜻이다)."

"I am sitting on the cusp of middle age(나는 중년의 초입에 들어섰다)."

"Mr Short's behaviour is only on the cusp of acceptability(쇼트 씨의 행동은 간신히 받아들일 만한 것과 그렇지 않은 것의 경계에 처해 있다)."

더프리딕셔너리는 'on the cusp'의 뜻을 두 가지로 나누었다.

첫째, "On the verge of some beginning point or the start of some major development. Usually followed by "of (something)(어떤 거의 시작점이나 주요한 발전 과정의 시작의 가장자리에 있는. 대개 'of (something)'이 뒤따른다)."

"Our team is on the cusp of making a discovery that could change the face of modern medicine(우리 팀은 현대 의학의 얼굴을 바꾸어 놓을 수 있는 발견을 하기 직전에 있다)."

"After being on the cusp for several years, Mark finally broke into mainstream success with his most recent novel(몇 년간 중간에 끼인 애매한 위치에 있다가, 마크는 마침내 가장 최근작 소설로 대박을 터뜨렸다)."

둘째, "Straddling or right in between two different categories, regions, conditions, etc. Usually followed by "between (something) and (something)(두 가지 다른 분류나 지역, 상태 등의 사이에 양다리를 걸치고 있거나 그 사이에 바로 끼어 있는. 대개 'between (something)'이 뒤따른다)."

"I hate the awkward, unpredictable weather we get when we're on the cusp between winter and spring(나는 겨울과 봄 사이에 있는 애매하고 예측 불가능한 날씨가 싫다)."

"The restaurant is on the cusp between fast food and sit-down dining, but unfortunately has the perks of neither(그 레스토랑은 패스트 푸드점과 앉아서 식사하는 음식점 중간 스타일인데, 불행히도 둘 중 그 어느쪽의 매력도 가지고 있지 않다)."
