[영어 공부] come to a head/bring sth to a head(곪아서 터질 듯하다, (문제 등이) 정점[위기]에 이르다)

 

평생 참으며 살 수는 없다. 뭐든 참다 참다가 더 이상은 못 참겠을 때, 뭔가 속상하거나 답답한 게 곪아서 터질 듯한 것 같은 때가 오게 마련이다.

그런 위기의 순간을 'come to a head' 또는 '(someone) bring sth to a head'라는 표현으로 묘사할 수 있다.

케임브릿지 사전은 'come to a head'를 이렇게 정의했다. "If something comes to a head or someone brings something to a head, a situation reaches a point where something must be done about it(어떤 것이 come to a head 하거나 누군가 bring something to a head 한다면, 그 상황에 대해 대처가 필요한 지점에 다다르는 것이다)."

"Things hadn't been good between us for a while and this incident just brought it to a head(우리 사이 관계가 좋지는 못했는데, 이 사건으로 아예 곪던 게 터져 버린 거지)."

맥밀란 사전은 'come / bring something to a head'를 이렇게 설명했다. "if a situation comes to a head, or if you bring it to a head, it suddenly becomes worse(어떤 상황이 come to a head 또는 당신이 그것을 bring to a head 한다면, 갑자기 악화되는 것이다)"

"Everything came to a head last week when two of the teachers resigned(교사 두 명이 사직한 지난주에 모든 일이 위기에 몰렸다)."

롱맨 사전은 'come to a head'를 "if a problem or difficult situation comes to a head, or something brings it to a head, it suddenly becomes worse and has to be dealt with quickly(문제나 어려운 상황이 come to a head 하거나 어떤 것이 그것을 bring to a head 한다면, 갑자기 악화가 되어 급히 해결되어야 하는 것이다)"
