'아웃소스드(Outsourced)'라는 미드를 보신 분? 인도에 아웃소싱된, 미국 기업의 콜센터 이야기인데 재미있다.

아쉬운 것은 이게 시즌 1으로 끝났다는 것. 난 재밌게 봤는데 시청률이 낮았는지... 큽...

어쨌거나 '아웃소싱'처럼, 원래 자기가 해야 하는 일을 남이 처리하도록 맡기는 것, 줘 버리는 것을 'farm out something'이라는 구 동사(phrasal verb)로 표현할 수 있다.

케임브릿지 사전은 'far out something'을 "to give work to other people to do(다른 사람이 하도록 일을 넘기다)"라고 정의했다.

"Magazines often farm out articles to freelance journalists(잡지는 대개 프리랜서 저널리스트들에게 기사를 외주로 준다)."

콜린스 사전은 'farm out'을 이렇게 설명했다. "If you say that someone farms out work, especially work that you would normally expect them to do themselves, you mean that they give it to other people to do(어떤 사람이 일을, 특히 보통 스스로 할 것이라고 기대되는 일을 farm out 한다고 말하면, 다른 사람이 하도록 줘 버린다는 뜻이다)."

"The trend for corporate legal staffs is to do more work in-house, instead of farming it out to law firms(기업의 법률 담당 직원의 경향은, 로펌들에게 일을 맡기기보다는 사내에서 더 많은 일을 하는 것이다)." 

"We can take advantage of new technology more quickly by farming out computer operations(컴퓨터 작업을 외주로 맡김으로써 신기술을 더 빨리 이용할 수 있다)."

"They've tended to farm out work to consultants(그들은 컨설턴트들에게 일을 맡기는 경향이 있어 왔다)."

맥밀란 사전은 'farm out'을 "to send part of your work to be done by people outside a company(기업 외부의 사람들이 처리하도록 당신의 일 일부를 내보내다)" 

"We could always farm the typing out to freelancers(타이핑하는 일은 언제든 프리랜서들에게 외주로 맡길 수 있죠)."
