[영어 공부] a rash of sth((대개 안 좋은 일들의) 다발, 빈발)

 

두드러기가 나 본 분들은 알겠지만, 두드러기는 절대 한두 개만 뽈록 올라오지 않는다. 조그만 것들이 뭉쳐서 여기에 이렇게 나고, 또 저기에 저만큼 모여서 새빨게 올라오고는 한다.

이렇게 두드러기 나듯 안 좋은 일들이 연달아 일어나는 걸 'a rash of sth'이라고 표현한다.

케임브릿지 사전은 'a rash of sth'을 "​a large number of unpleasant events of the same type(같은 유형의 불쾌한 사건들 다수)"이라고 정의했다.

"There has been a rash of robberies/accidents/complaints in the last two months(지난 두 달, 강도/사고/불만이 많이 일어났다)."

콜린스 사전은 'a rash of'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you talk about a rash of events or things, you mean a large number of unpleasant events or undesirable things, which have happened or appeared within a short period of time(사건 또는 사물의 rash라고 하면, 짧은 기간 내에 일어나거나 나타난 불쾌한 사건 또는 바람직하지 않은 것들이 많다는 뜻이다)."

"...one of the few major airlines left untouched by the industry's rash of takeovers(그 업계의 경영권 인수의 마수가 뻗치지 않은, 몇 안 되는 항공사 중 하나)." 

"Now a rash of scruffy little shops bordered one side of the street(이제는 꾀죄죄한 작은 가게들이 길 한쪽에 많이 늘어서 있다)."

맥밀란 사전은 'rash'를 "a lot of instances of a particular thing taking place in a short period of time, especially something unpleasant(짧은 시간 내에 특정한 것의 많은 예가 일어나는 것, 특히 불쾌한 것들)"라고 풀이했다.

"Local police are investigating a rash of burglaries in the area(지역 경찰은 그 지역 내의 일련의 절도 사건들을 수사 중이다)."
