[영어 공부] wide-eyed(눈이 휘둥그레한 / 순진한)

 

얼마 전부터 웹툰 <용이 산다>를 보기 시작해서 빠른 속도로 주파하고 있는데, 마리 너무 귀엽다ㅠㅠ

용이나 인간이나 귀여운 것들은 대개 눈이 땡그란 듯하다. 

영어에서는 놀라거나 겁을 먹어서 눈이 땡그랗게 된 걸 'wide-eyed'라고 하는데, 같은 단어에는 '순진한'이라는 뜻도 있다.

케임브릿지 사전은 'wide-eyed'를 "too willing to believe and admire what you see or are told(당신이 보거나 들은 것을 너무나 기꺼이 믿거나 감탄하려 하는)"라고 정의했다. 

"At that time, I was still a wide-eyed youngster(당시에 나는 여전히 순진한 청소년이었다)." 

콜린스 사전은 'wide-eyed'의 첫 번째 의미를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you describe someone as wide-eyed, you mean that they are inexperienced and innocent, and may be easily impressed(누군가를 wide-eyed라고 묘사한다면, 그들이 경험이 없고 순진하며, 쉽게 감명을 받을 수 있다는 뜻이다).

"Her wide-eyed innocence soon exposes the pretensions of the art world(그녀의 순진한 천진함은 예술계의 가식을 폭로했다).

"...a wide-eyed boy ready to explore(탐험할 준비가 된, 순진한 소년)."

두 번째 뜻은 이렇다. "If you describe someone as wide-eyed, you mean that their eyes are more open than usual, especially because they are surprised or frightened(누군가 wide-eyed 하다면, 특히 놀랐거나 겁을 먹어서 평소보다 눈을 크게 떴다는 뜻이다)."

"She is wide-eyed with astonishment(그녀는 경탄하며 눈을 휘둥그레 떴다)." 

"...an expression of wide-eyed amazement(눈이 휘둥그레해지는, 놀랐다는 표현)." 

맥밀란 사전은 'wile-eyed'의 첫 번째 뜻을 "with an expression that shows that you are very surprised, frightened, or impressed(놀랐거나, 겁먹었거나, 감명받았다는 것을 드러내는 표정을 한)"라고 풀이했다. 

두 번째 뜻은 "easily tricked or impressed because you do not have much experience(경험이 별로 없어서 쉽게 속거나 감명받는)"이다.
