'know sth like the back of your hand'는 어떤 것, 특히 장소나 지리를 아주 훤히 잘 안다는 뜻인데, 사람들은 자기 손등처럼 너무나 자주 보는 것에는 너무 익숙해서 오히려 잘 모른다는 점을 생각하면 잘못된 표현이 아닌가 싶다.

케임브릿지 사전은 'know sth like the back of your hand'를 "to have very good and detailed knowledge of something(무엇에 관해 아주 잘, 세세하게 알다)"이라고 정의했다.

"I know this area like the back of my hand(나는 이 지역을 구석구석 잘 안다)."

콜린스 사전은 'know something like toe back of your hand'를 "to know something very well(무엇을 아주 잘 알다)"이라고 설명했다.

"He knows the city like the back of his hand(그는 그 도시를 훤히 잘 안다)."

맥밀란 사전은 'know something like the back of your hand'를 "to be very familiar with something, especially a place or way of going somewhere(어떤 것, 특히 어떤 장소나 어디로 가는 길에 아주 익숙하다)"라고 풀이했다.

"She knows these streets like the back of her hand(그녀는 이 길들을 속속들이 다 안다)."
