'drown'에 '물에 빠지다', '익사하다'라는 뜻이 있다는 사실은 다들 알 것이다.

그런데 'drown'에는 어떤 소리가 안 들릴 정도로 커서 그 소리를 묻어 버린다는 뜻도 있다. 아래 뜻풀이를 참고하시라.

케임브릿지 사전은 'drown out something'을 "(of a sound) to be loud enough to block the sound of something else((소리가) 다른 것의 소리를 차단할 만큼 크다)"라고 정의했다.

"The sound of the telephone was drowned out by the vacuum cleaner(전화기 소리는 진공 청소기 소리에 묻혔다)."

콜린스 사전은 'drown'과 'drown out'이 같은 뜻이라고 하고 이렇게 설명해 놓았다. "If something drowns a sound, it is so loud that you cannot hear that sound properly(어떤 것이 소리를 drown 한다면, 그것이 너무 커서 그 소리를 제대로 들을 수 없는 것이다)."

"Clapping drowned the speaker's words for a moment(박수 소리가 너무 커서 잠시 연설자의 말이 들리지 않았다)."

"Their cheers drowned out the protests of demonstrators(그들의 환호 소리가 데모하는 이들의 항의를 덮어 버렸다)."

"Her voice was drowned out by a loud crash(그녀의 목소리는 커다란 굉음에 묻혀 들리지 않았다)."

맥밀란 사전은 'drown' 또는 'drown out'이 "to prevent a sound from being heard by making a louder noise(더 큰 소리를 내서 어떤 소리가 들리지 않게 하다)"라고 풀이했다.

"The music almost drowned the sound of his voice(음악 때문에 그의 목소리가 거의 들리지 않았다)."
