청소를 하라고 하면 그냥 눈에 보이는 더러운 것들 또는 물건들을 그냥 서랍 속이나 옷장, 또는 침대 밑 등, 눈에 잘 안 띄는 곳으로 그냥 밀어 넣어 버리는 사람들이 있다. 이건 제대로 된 청소가 아니다.

같은 의미에서 어떤 문제를 해결하지 않고 그냥 모르는 척하거나 비밀로 덮어 두는 것은 제대로 된 해결 방법이 아니다.

이런 건 눈에 보이는 더러운 먼지를 쓸어서 버리지 않고 그냥 카페트(또는 러그) 밑으로 슥 밀어넣는 것과 다름이 없다. 

제대로 문제를 해결하지 않고 덮어 두기에만 급급한 태도를 가리키는 'sweep something under the rug/carpet'이라는 표현도 여기서 나왔다.

케임브릿지 사전은 'sweep somehing under the rug'를 "to hide something damaging or unpleasant and try to keep it secret(악영향을 주는 또는 불쾌한 것을 숨기고 비밀로 하려고 하다)"이라고 정의했다.

"This scandal can’t be swept under the rug(이 스캔들을 비밀로 할 순 없을 거요)."

콜린스 사전은 'sweep something under the carpet'을 "to try to hide and forget about something because it makes you embarrassed or ashamed. The usual American expression is sweep something under the rug(어떤 것이 민망하거나 수치스럽기 때문에 그것을 숨기고 잊어버리려고 하다. 보통 미국식 표현은 'sweep something under the rug'이다)."라고 설명했다.
People often assume if you sweep something under the carpet the problem will go away, but that is not the case.

맥밀란 사전은 'sweep something under the carpet'을 "to try to avoid dealing with a problem(어떤 문제를 처리하는 것을 기피하다)"이라고 풀이했다. 

"You can’t just sweep these issues under the carpet(이 문제들을 감출 순 없어요)."
