[영어 공부] fall into place(일이 문제없이 진행되다 / 이야기·정보가 이해되다, 앞뒤가 맞아떨어지다)

 

퍼즐을 맞추는 상황을 생각해 보자. 처음에 퍼즐을 맞추려고 하면 완성된 그림을 봐도 뭐가 어디인지 파악하기 어렵다.

그러다가 점점 더 맞춰진 조각이 많을수록 다음 조각을 어디에 놓아야 할지 발견하기가 쉬워지며, 마침내 마지막 조각을 맞추는 순간 모든 것이 완벽하게 맞아떨어진다.

이렇게 이해하기 힘들던 것이 마침내 이해가 되는 순간, 앞뒤가 맞아떨어져서 '아, 그게 그거구나!' 하고 깨닫게 되는 순간에 'Everything fell into place(모든 것이 마침내 이해됐다)'라고 말할 수 있다.

 

 

케임브릿지는 'fall into place'를 이렇게 정의한다. "When things fall into place, they happen in a satisfactory way, without problems(사건들이 fall into place 하면, 그 일이 문제없이 만족스럽게 일어나는 것이다)".

"If you plan the project well, then everything should fall into place(프로젝트를 잘 계획하면, 모든 게 딱딱 맞게 진행될 거야)."

두 번째 뜻. "When events or details that you did not understand before fall into place, they become easy to understand(이전에 이해하지 못했던 사건들이나 세부 사항이 fall into place 하면, 이해하기 쉽게 되는 것이다)."

"Once I discovered that the woman was his sister, everything fell into place(그 여자가 그의 누이라는 사실을 알게 되자, 모든 것이 단번에 이해되었다)."

콜린스 사전은 "If things fall into place, events happen naturally to produce a situation you want(모든 것이 fall into place 하면, 당신이 원하는 상황을 만들기 위해 사건들이 자연스럽게 일어나는 것이다)."라고 첫 번째 의미를 설명해 놓았다.

"Once the decision was made, things fell into place rapidly(결정이 내려지자, 모든 것은 일사천리로 진행되었다)."

"Keep your options open and everything will fall into place(선택을 유보하고 기다려 봐. 모든 게 잘될 거야)."

메리암웹스터 사전은 두 번째 의미를 "to fit together: to make sense(딱 맞다 / 이해가 되다)"라고 풀이했다.
