[영어 공부] I see where you're coming from(네가 왜 그런 말을 하는지 알겠다)

 

이건 미국인 친구가 자주 하는 말이라서 배웠다. 내가 어떤 의견을 제시하면 "네가 왜 그런 말을 하는지 알겠다"며 이 말을 하는데, 그렇다고 해서 반드시 내 말에 동의하는 것은 아니다.

그냥 어떤 이유로 그런 말을 하는지 이해하겠다는 의미이다.

콜린스 사전은 'Where someone is coming from'을 이렇게 설명했다. "You can use expressions like I know where you're coming from or you can see where she's coming from to say that you understand someone's attitude or point of view(상대방의 태도나 관점을 이해한다는 의미로 'I know wher you're coming from' 또는 'you can see where she's coming from' 같은 표현을 사용할 수 있다)."

"To understand why they are doing it, it is necessary to know where they are coming from(그들이 왜 그러는지 이해하려면, 그들이 그렇게 행동하게 된 원인을 이해할 필요가 있다)."

"You see where I'm coming from?(내가 왜 이러는지 알겠지?)"

롱맨 사전은 'come from somebody/something'이 대개 'where somebody is coming from'의 형태로 쓰여 "the basic attitude or opinion someone has, which influences what they think, say, or do(상대방이 생각하거나 말하거나 행동하는 것에 영향을 끼치는 기본적인 태도나 의견)"라는 의미가 있다고 설명했다. 물론 인포멀(informal)한 표현이다.

"I see where you’re coming from now(네가 왜 그렇게 말하는지 이해해)."

맥밀란 사전은 'come from'을 활용한 'where someone is coming from'이 "the ideas, intentions, or feelings that make someone say a particular thing or behave in a particular way(상대가 특정한 말을 하거나 특정한 방식으로 행동하게 만드는 사고나 의도, 또는 감정)"라는 뜻이라고 풀이했다.
