[영어 공부] You have my undivided attention(네게만 집중할게)

 

누구나 자기 이야기를 잘 들어 주는 사람을 좋아한다. 자기 이야기를 진솔하게 할 때 "You have my undivided attention(네게만 집중할게)." 하고 말하며 주의 깊게 들어 주는 사람이 있다면 사랑에 빠질지도 모른다. 딴 짓도 안 하고 딴 생각도 안 하고 내 이야기를 들어 주다니!

'undivided'는 말 그대로 분리되지 않았다는 의미이다. 케임브릿지 사전은 'undivided'를 "existing as a whole, not in separate parts(분리된 부분이 아니라 전체로서 존재하는)"라고 정의했다.

따라서 'undivided attention'은 "complete attention(완전한 집중)"을 의미한다.

"If you just wait till I've finished this bit of work you will have/I will give you my undivided attention(이 일만 끝낼 때까지 기다려 주면 너한테만 집중할게)."

콜린스 사전은 'undivided'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you give someone or something your undivided attention, you concentrate on them fully and do not think about anything else(누구 또는 무엇에게 undivided attention을 준다면, 그들에게 온전히 집중하고 다른 것에 대해서는 생각하지 않는 것이다)."

"Eldest children are the only ones to have experienced the undivided attention of their parents(맏이들은 부모의 온전한 관심을 경험한 유일한 자녀들이다)."

"Adults rarely give the television their undivided attention(어른들은 텔레비전에만 온전히 집중하는 일이 드물다)."

"...any task that requires undivided concentration(온전한 집중을 요구하는 그 어떤 업무...)."

메리암웹스터 사전은 'undivided'의 뜻을 두 가지로 나누어 풀이한다.

첫째는 "not separated into parts or pieces : existing as a single whole : not divided(부분이나 조각으로 나누어지지 아니한: 단일한 전체로 존재하는: 분리되지 아니한)"

"an undivided property(분할되지 않은 재산"

두 번째는 "complete or total(온전한 또는 전체의)"이라는 의미이다.

"They listened to the lecture with undivided attention(그들은 완전히 집중해서 강의를 들었다)."
