[영어 공부] brush off someone/something(~을 무시하다, 가볍게 치부하고 넘어가다)

 

내가 무슨 말을 했는데 진지하게 받아들여지지 않으면 기분이 좋지 않을 것이다.

남의 말을 가볍게 치부하고 넘어가는 걸 영어로는 'brush off'라고 말할 수 있다.

케임브릿지 사전은 'brush off someone/something'을 "to refuse to consider what someone says, or to not admit that something may be true or important(어떤 사람이 말하는 것을 고려해 보기를, 또는 어떤 것이 사실이거나 중요하다고 인정하기를 거부하다)"라고 정의한다.

"The committee chairman brushed her off when she tried to raise the issue(위원회 회장은 그녀가 그 문제를 제기하려 하자 이를 무시해 버렸다)."

"Ehrlich brushes off suggestions that he's spending taxpayer dollars for campaign ads(얼리치는 납세자들이 낸 돈을 캠페인 광고에 쓰고 있다는 의혹을 일축했다)."
