내가 말을 해 놓고서 바로 '아, 왜 그런 말을 했을까' 하고 후회하는 경우가 종종 있다.

아니면 굴러들어온 복을 복인 줄도 모르고 차 버리는 바보 같은 때도 있다. 자기 발등을 자기가 찍는 이런 바보 같은 행위를 영어로 'shoot oneself in the foot'이라고 표현할 수 있다. 말 그대로 총으로 자기 발을 쏜다는 뜻이다.

케임브릿지 사전은 'shoot yourself in the foot'을 "to do something without intending to which spoils a situation for yourself(의도하지 않았으나 자신의 상황을 망치는 짓을 하다)"라고 정의했다.

콜린스 사전은 'shoot oneself in the foot'을 "to damage one's own cause inadvertently(무심코 자신의 대의명분에 피해를 끼치다)"라고 설명했다.

롱맨 사전은 'shoot yourself in the foot'을 "to say or do something stupid that will cause you a lot of trouble(당신에게 많은 문제를 일으킬 바보 같은 것을 말하거나 행하다)"라고 풀이했다.

"If he keeps talking, pretty soon he’ll shoot himself in the foot(걘 계속 말하다간 곧 자기 발등을 찍게 될걸)."

"But at the end of the day, they could end up shooting themselves in the foot(하지만 결국엔 그들이 스스로 자기 발등을 찍게 될 수도 있다)."
