[영어 공부] mill around/about(서성거리다, 배회하다)

 

수많은 인파가 몰려 있으면, 마치 출근길 지하철 안에서 내가 원치 않아도 앞뒤 사람들의 움직임에 같이 밀려가는 것처럼, 그 많은 사람들이 마치 바닷속 해초가 파도에 흔들리듯 하나가 되어 움직이는 것 같아 보인다.

'mill around' 또는 'mill about'도 그런 한 무리의 움직임을 묘사하는 단어이다.

케임브릿지 사전은 'mill around'를 표제어로 올리고 'mill about'더ㅗ 같은 의미라고 덧붙인 후 이렇게 정의했다.

"If a group of people mill around, they move around with no particular purpose or in no particular direction, sometimes while waiting for someone(한 그룹의 사람이 mill around 한다면, 때로 누군가를 기다리면서 특별한 목적 없이 또는 특정한 방향 없이 움직이는 것이다)."

"In the square, people were milling around in the sunshine(광장에는 사람들이 햇빛을 받으며 서성이고 있었다)."

콜린스 사전은 영국에서는 'mill about'을 더 자주 쓴다고 알린 후 'mill around'를 이렇게 설명했다.

"When a crowd of people mill around or mill about, they move around within a particular place or area, so that the movement of the whole crowd looks very confused(사람 무리가 mill around 또는 mill about 한다면, 특정한 장소 또는 구역 내에서 움직여서, 전체 무리의 움직임이 아주 혼란스러워 보이는 것이다).

"Quite a few people were milling about, but nothing was happening(꽤 많은 사람들이 배회하고 있었지만, 아무 일도 일어나지 않았다)."

"Dozens of people milled around Charing Cross Road and Denmark Street(수십 명이 채링 크로스 로드와 덴마크 스트릿 주위에서 서성거렸다)."

맥밀란 사전은 'mill around'를 "to move about in large numbers in a confused way with no particular purpose(특정한 목적 없이 혼란스러워하는 방식으로 떼를 지어 움직이다)"라고 풀이했다.
