[영어 공부] branch out(새로운 분야로 진출하다)

예전엔 내 안전 지대(comfort zone)에서 벗어나는 걸 극도로 두려워했는데 이젠 나이가 좀 들었다고 조금 용기가 난다. 그래서 아주 조금씩 새로운 일들을 시도해 보려고 한다.

구 동사(phrasal verb) 'branch out'은 나무에 새 가지가 나서 멀리 뻗어가듯 '새로운 분야로 진출하다'라는 뜻이다.

케임브릿지 사전은 'branch out'을 "to start to do something different from what you usually do, especially in your job(특히 일에서 평소에 하는 것과 다른 것을 시작하다)"이라고 정의했다.

"This designer has recently branched out into children's wear(이 디자이너는 최근에 아동복 분야에 진출했다)." 

"After a couple of years working for other people, she branched out on her own (= started her own business)(몇 년간 다른 사람을 밑에서 일하다 그녀는 자신의 사업을 시작했다)."

콜린스 사전은 'branch out'을 이렇게 설명했다. "If a person or an organization branches out, they do something that is different from their normal activities or work(개인이나 단체가 branch out 한다면, 그들은 평소에 하던 활동이나 일과 다른 것을 하는 것이다)." 

"I continued studying moths, and branched out to other insects(나는 계속 나방을 공부하다가, 다른 곤충들로 뻗어나갔다)."

맥밀란 사전은 'branch out'을 "to start doing something new or different(새롭거나 다른 일을 시작하다)"라고 풀이한다.

"Designers have branched out from clothes to cosmetics and toiletries(디자이너들은 의류에서 화장품과 세면용품으로 진출했다)."

'branch out into'의 형태로도 쓴다. 이 예문처럼. "In the longer term, the company wants to branch out into providing investment advice(장기적으로 봤을 때 그 회사는 투자 조언을 제공하는 쪽으로 진출해 나가고 싶어 한다)."

'branch out on your own'으로 쓰면 케임브릿지 사전의 두 번째 예문에서 보았듯이 개인 사업을 시작한다는 뜻이다. "Quinn wanted to leave the company and branch out on his own(퀸은 회사를 떠나 자신의 사업을 벌이고 싶어 했다)."
