[영어 공부] beg the question(질문을 하게 하다)

 

나는 나 자신에게 물음표 살인마였다. '그때 나는 왜 그랬을까? 그 일은 왜 그렇게 된 걸까? 내가 이렇게 행동했다면 결과가 달라지지 않았을까?' 등등, 끊임없이 나를 자책했다.

그런데 원인을 안다고 달라지는 건 없었다. 왜 물이 엎어졌는지 이유를 알게 된다고 해서, 이미 흘린 물이 다시 컵 안으로 들어가진 않는 것처럼.

그래서 나는 내게 그런 질문을 하는 걸 그만뒀다.

이렇게 어떤 말이나 설명이 다른 질문을 하게 만드는 것을 'beg the question'이라고 한다.

케임브릿지 사전은 'beg the question'을 이렇게 정의했다. "If a statement or situation begs the question, it causes you to ask a particular question(어떤 발언이나 상황이 beg the question 한다면, 특정한 질문을 하게 만드는 것이다)." 

"Spending the summer travelling around India is a great idea, but it does beg the question of how we can afford it(여름을 인도 여행하며 보낸다는 건 좋은 아이디어지만, 우리가 어떻게 그 여행비를 충당할 건지 궁금해지네)." 

"To discuss the company's future begs the question of whether it has a future(그 기업의 미래에 대해 논하려면 일단 그것에 미래가 있는지를 묻게 된다)."

콜린스 사전은 'beg the question'을 이렇게 설명했다. "If you say that something begs a particular question, you mean that it makes people want to ask that question; some people consider that this use is incorrect(어떤 것이 특정한 질문을 하게 beg 한다면, 사람들로 하여금 그 질문을 하고 싶게 만든다는 의미이다. 어떤 이들은 이런 용법이 틀렸다고 여긴다)." 

"Hopewell's success begs the question: why aren't more companies doing the same?(호프웰의 성공은 이런 질문을 던진다: 왜 더 많은 기업들이 같은 일을 하지 않는가?)"

롱맨 사전은 'beg the question'의 이런 의미를 " to make you want to ask a question that has not yet been answered(당신으로 하여금 아직 대답을 듣지 못한 질문을 하고 싶게 만들다)"라고 풀이했다.

"This proposal begs the question of who is going to pay for the new building(이 제안은 그럼 누가 이 새 건물의 비용을 댈지 질문하게 만드는군요)."
