[영어 공부] mettle(패기, 능력)

 

영한 사전에서 'mettle'을 검색하면 '패기, 보짱'이라고 나오는데, 영영 사전을 보면 그 의미가 조금 다르게 설명돼 있다.

자세한 내용은 아래에서 살펴보겠지만, 대체로 영영 사전은 'mettle'을 '능력'을 의미한다고 본다.

확실히 '패기'라고 하면 '우오오오오!' 하며 불타오르는 어떤 '정신'적인 것이라는 느낌을 받는 반면에, '능력'이라고 하면 그렇게 불타오르든 말든 그런 것에는 상관없이 일을 제대로 하는 '기술'적인 것이라는 뉘앙스가 강하다. 이 점 유의하시라.

케임브릿지 사전은 'mettle'을 "ability and determination when competing or doing something difficult(경쟁하거나 어려운 것을 할 때 보이는 능력과 투지)"라고 정의했다.

"The team showed/proved its mettle in the final round(그 팀은 결승에서 자신들의 능력을 보여 주었다)." 

"The real test of her political mettle came in the May elections(그녀의 정치적 능력의 진정한 시험은 5월 선거에서 나왔다)." 

콜린스 사전은 'mettle'을 이렇게 설명했다. "Someone's mettle is their ability to do something well in difficult circumstances(누군가의 mettle은 어려운 상황 속에서 무언가를 잘할 수 있는 능력이다)." 

"His first important chance to show his mettle came when he opened the new session of the Legislature(그가 자신의 능력을 보여 줄 첫 번째 중요한 기회는 입법부의 새 회의를 열 때 찾아왔다)." 

"For both sides, it's the first real test of their mettle this season(양쪽 모두에게 이것은 이번 시즌에 자신의 능력을 시험할 첫 진짜 시험이다)." 

맥밀란 사전은 'mettle'을 "the determination and ability to deal with problems and difficult situations(문제와 어려운 상황에 대응하는 투지와 능력)"라고 풀이했다. 

"She has the opportunity to prove her mettle as a manager(그녀는 매니저로서의 능력을 입증할 기회를 만났다)."
