[영어 공부] wipe the floor with sb(~를 납작하게 누르다, 참패시키다)

 

'wipe the floor with sb'는 '~를 납작하게 누르다, 참패시키다'라는 뜻인데, 상대를 가지고 바닥을 닦을(wipe the floor) 정도면 얼마나 가볍게 이겨 버리는 건지 상상이 간다.

애초에 이 표현이 인포멀(informal)하기 때문에 좀 더 우리나라 10~20대 말투로 의역한다면 '밟아 버린다', '참교육시키다' 정도가 되지 않을까.

케임브릿지 사전은 'wipe the floor with sb'를 "to defeat someone very easily(누군가를 아주 쉽게 패배시키다)"라고 정의했다.

""I hear Italy beat France in the semifinals last night." "Beat them? They wiped the floor with them!"("어젯밤 준결승에서 이탈리아가 프랑스를 이겼다고 들었어." "이겼다고? 그 정도가 아니라 완전히 밟아 버렸다니까!")" 

콜린스 사전은 'wipe the floor with someone'을 이렇게 설명했다. "If you wipe the floor with someone, you defeat them completely in a competition or discussion(wipe the floor with someone 한다면, 대결이나 토론에서 그들을 완전히 패배시키는 것이다)."

"He could wipe the floor with the opposition(그는 상대를 완전히 깔아뭉갤 수 있었다)." 

맥밀란 사전은 'wipe the floor with someone'을 "to defeat someone very easily in a game or an argument(게임이나 언쟁에서 누군가를 아주 쉽게 패배시키다)"라고 풀이했다.

"She wiped the floor with the opposition(그녀는 적수를 아주 간단하게 이겨 버렸다)."
